Chic new ‘glamping’ pods crafted by boat builders for Broads holiday destination.
An award-winning holiday park and marina in the southern Norfolk Broads has used the traditional skills of its boatbuilders to create an upmarket camping experience.
Three new glamping pods have been introduced at the 5 star Waveney River Centre. Known as ‘Escape Pods’, the accommodation was successfully trialled at the site next to the River Waveney, at Burgh St Peter, near Beccles, towards the end of last season.
Now, following positive feedback and customer demand, the owners, James and Ruth Knight, are planning to add three more to create a cluster behind the site’s popular conventional camping pitches.
At the beginning of 2013, James and Ruth realised that the demand for quirky camping holidays was increasing. They tasked their own boatbuilders to design the new Escape Pods “to suit the natural landscape of the Broads, mixing the popular ‘Pod’ concept with a twist of boat”.
Built in the Park’s own 2,500 square foot boat workshop, the glamping pods perfectly complement the Park’s range of accommodation, which includes luxury lodges, penthouses, camping and touring pitches.
Measuring 14ft long x 10ft wide, with each taking just two weeks to build, the pods are environmentally made from sustainable timber – larch on the outside with a pine interior. The team’s boatbuilding skills have been put to good use to maximise the space available. Each pod features lots of storage space with a raised double bed and two single beds.
The pods are cosy too, featuring double glazed doors and a window and wrapped in foil-backed multi-layer insulation and sheep’s wool – helping to keep them warm in winter and cool in summer.
Complete with a Freeview TV, heater, LED lights, double socket and with stunning views over the Waveney River and nearby Carlton Marshes nature reserve, the pods are available from just £40 per night.
